Pistol Australia today announced that Daniel Repacholi of Melton South, Victoria and Tara Jones of Bellingen, NSW have been selected onto the Australian Junior Commonwealth Games Squad for 2001.
Repacholi and Jones, both 18, are two of Australia's promising junior pistol shooters selected by Pistol Australia as having the potential to represent Australia at the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games.
Daniel's selection was based on his outstanding performances at the 2000 ISSF Pistol Australia National Championships where he won the men's open Air Pistol event, and his consistent performances over the last 12 months. He also represented Australia at the Malaysian National Championships last year where he took out first place in two events.
Tara's selection was based on her outstanding performances at the 2000 ISSF Pistol Australia National Championships where she finished second in Junior Women's Air Pistol and Junior Sport (behind Repacholi). Tara has recorded some successful results throughout her young career and shows to be a consistent improver.
Members of the Australian Junior Commonwealth Games Squad receive funding from the Australian Commonwealth Games Association, a program set up for all Commonwealth sports with the aim of providing assistance to develop junior athletes for future Commonwealth Games. This program has been welcomed by Pistol Australia and provides promising athletes with the opportunity to compete overseas and gain valuable experience for future International competitions.
The funding received for Daniel and Tara will enable them to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Shooting Federation Championships being held in Bisley, UK, in August 2001. This event will be a practise event for the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games.
