October 2000

  • Late September - Not much happening on the shooting front for the last couple of weeks, too busy watching the Olympics on the TV and catching up on the scores for AusPistol...
During the break, I did some testing of the Walther Rapid Fire barrel in the pistol clubs 'Ransom Rest'. (The barrel was an old model OSP barrel I have had machined back and with a couple of extra 'ports' added as well.) It struggled to hold a 100mm group with the old Fiocchi Ammo I had been using for some of my training, but it was ok with the RWS R25 ammo I have for competitions, about a 40mm group (8 ring on an Air pistol target at 25 meters). I have also got a new OSP 'match' barrel that shoots about the same size groups, it is good to have a spare I guess.
  • Early October - I have been doing a bit of shooting in Free Pistol lately as I have 'tidied up' the old Toz 35. Have removed the 'temporary' stick on wheel weights from the barrel and added a steel rod out of the front woodwork for a bit of weight out the front. It took a little bit of playing around as there seemed to be a bit of vibration in the gun during the recoil, but a bit of fine tuning and adjustment has improved the feel of the gun and it seems to handle quite well now. I have also been experimenting with my shooting glasses, especially on the Free Pistol range, and will be getting another pair of shooting 'sunglasses' made up in the next week or so to help with any bright conditions on the range.
  • October 8 - Rapid Fire practice - I went out to shoot a bit more Free Pistol but decided to do some Rapid Fire as practice for Tuesday. Rob Potter will come out to the range and 'make a bit of noise' as well, just to get the feel of a bit of competition.
  • October 10 - Rapid Fire practice - Rob Potter came out for a practise match of Rapid and he did make it interesting with a couple of 'non planned' malfunctions just to make sure I was concentrating. The 'match' ended up with 291 & 293 for a 584 total.
  • October 21/22 - Lismore Open Shoot - Nothing marvelous about this weekend, could only manage one '50' for the whole weekend and that was in the sighters for the second half of Rapid. A bit disappointed in Rapid, 569, quite ordinary. It seemed as though all I could shoot was 9.7 to 10.2 and too many on the bottom end of the scale. Can't really put my finger on what the problem was, most likely not watching the sights. Air Pistol ended up with the same score - 569. Shot some good 10s if I shot quickly, but struggled with keeping the sights in focus otherwise. Again, the good old lesson of trying some other lenses in the glasses perhaps, it might have made things a bit better. Free Pistol was not bad, 545. Reasonably consistant though the match but could have been better with more commitment to 'cancelling' a shot on a couple of occasions.
  • October 29 - 'Assorted' practise - I have put bigger sights onto the Standard Pistol after Lismore, but I think the rear sight 'notch' is now too big. I had trouble calling the shots in slow fire and I was not comfortable with the large sight gaps. Will get another Walther sight blade and glue it on again and be more careful with the file this time. A bit more Rapid Fire practise to finish up the morning and again I was having trouble calling the shots as well as I would like. Eventually realised that I need to look AT the sights, not throught them. Stating the obvious I know but sometimes I just need to wake up to the basics. After stuggling to get 97's in 8 seconds on the last couple of matches and practise sessions, I finished with a couple of 100s after this most basic change.
