November 2000
November 11/12 - Ansett Cup / Canberra Gift Open Shoot. Well, all I can say is it is good to get the bugs out before the QLD State in 2 weeks...
Rapid Fire - Started with a good 50 in sighters but could not repeat it anywhere else over the weekend. Again, I had trouble on the first target in RF, I need to be more confident in my technique and positive in my attitude to shooting good shots and series. In other words, GET SERIOUS about this match. It is not good enough to just practice, time to show some commitment.
Free Pistol - one of those matches that could have been better on any other day. There was not much I would want to do differently in this match, it just needed a bit more 'luck' on the day. But, as someone else once said, "the more I practice, the luckier I get".
Air Pistol - Fairly similar story to Free. This time the first series let me down, but after that it was 95s & 96s for a 566 total. OK, not great shooting but I was pleased with my commitment to the trigger and the overall 'feeling' of the match. There was only a few times that the shot did not release quickly and I 'cancelled' the shot. I still used most of the match time but used it well to pause and maintain a consistant approach to each shot. Sound strange, but I think it would have been a good match to watch as I felt I was in control of what I was doing at all times, not being rushed or distracted, just doing my own thing the way I wanted to.
Ansett Cup - each State sent one man & one woman to compete in a 'teams 10 shot Air Pistol Final format', 8 teams shot once on Saturday then the top 4 teams again on Sunday. I was shooting with Claire Turvey, a fellow Queenslander who has represented Australia as a Junior a couple of times. We were fortunate enough to make the top 4 teams (ok, 4th) for the Sunday Final and were confident of making some improvements the second time around. Well, as was commented by several of the spectators after the final, "it was good to see the Queenslanders were enjoying themselves". It turned out to be one of those shoots, it took ten shots between us until we hit the 10 ring... 9.4 and 9.8 up until then. After that if one of us got a 10 the other got an 8. It just didn't happen for either of us. The photos from the presentation should be good. The winners, well done ACT, have a picture of their 'Cups' and medals, then each of the other teams standing behind the presentation table... not Queensland... just before the photo was taken we reached over and picked up the Cup, don't print the scores, let the photos tell the story (grin).
One thing, I can guarantee both of us have benefited from the experience and will make big improvements at the QLD State in 2 weeks.
