Silver for hotshot Tait
Article from www.news.com.au
For more than 25 years Australian builder Peter Tait has shot countless bullets perfecting his craft.
In the last 18 months, with one goal in mind, a Paralympic medal, his passion has driven him to the practice range to train six days a week.
Today the 51-year-old Victorian's dream came true, winning Australia's first Paralympic shooting medal of the 2000 Games - a silver in the pistol mixed SH1 final.
Backed by a vocal home crowd including wife Colleen and three sons, Tait shot a final score of 664.7 to snare the medal.
Tait, who went into the finals ranked third with 568 points, quickly jumped to second position with strong shooting.
He made the most of the 75 seconds allowed, shooting a perfect 10.9 hit with his fourth bullet to lift him within 1.7 points behind the eventual gold medallist.
However nerves got the better of him on the next shot, where he scored just 7.2.
Tait held on for the four bullets to finish second, 4.9 points behind gold medallist Huang Wei of China. Russia's Andrey Lebedinsky took bronze just 0.3 behind Tait, with a final score of 664.4.
"It is indescribable," Tait said of his victory.
"You dream of something and when you get there, it's unbelievable. I'm still shaking."
Teammate Jim Nomarhas and West Australian Jeff Lane failed to make the final, finishing 10th and 11th respectively.
